Like everywhere else in South America, there is a broad choice of accommodations in the main Bolivian cities and villages near tourist attractions. One can find accommodation that fits his or her own tastes and budgets. In the most expensive category, hotels (also called "Hostal") guarantee a minimum of comfort and services according to the number of posted stars. For the more modest budgets, Pensions and Residential represent interesting points of fall. Such places usually provide basic comfort but facilitate contacts with local people and other tourists.
We have traveled around Bolivia and stayed in a few towns. Below are listed the different hotels we had the opportunity to test.

Violettas' apart hotel ***

Located a few steps from the Prado Avenue, the hotel is a perfect place to fully and freely enjoy Cochabamba. The
apartments are very comfortable, well equipped (rooms, kitchen, lounge with cable TV), the staff is friendly, very professional, and service
is impeccable. Excellent value for money. We can only recommend it!

Downtown, new (or renovated?) hotel, pleasant atmosphere, very confortable and nicely decorated rooms. Ask to see
several rooms so that you can select a sunny one with nice view (nights are quite chilly in Copacabana) from the balcony.

Hotel Cerro Verde

Located near the main square, this new building (which was under construction in 2005) is surrounded by a lovely
natural environment with amazing view of the Yungas valley. Rooms are reasonable, the swimming pool is relatively well maintained (during high season).

Titicaca Lake - Island of the Sun
Residencial Yumani

In Yumani, on top of the island, view on the Kakayo Queña ridge (South West of the island). Very
cheap (about $3/night), friendly hosts. Rooms are reasonable.

In Yumani, great view on the Island of the Moon and on the Cordillera real. From outside,
the place looks charming and good for relaxing, price is comparable to the Residencial Yumani (so very cheap),
but unfortunately we did not have more time to test this pension (next time, for sure!).

Santa Cruz

Not very far from the center of the city, in a relatively quiet and rich neighbourhood,
nice place with swimming pool and tropical plants, rooms are confortable. We would deplore the lack of concern of the management
for maintenance and renovation of the hotel (eg defective plumbing bathroom), a pity for a hotel of this category!

Downtown, friendly hosts, not expensive but the place is not exciting, rooms are basically
furnished, the swimming pool is in a tiny corner bordered by an ugly concrete wall, the hotel is extremely noisy
at any time (vicinity of the sport field).

Downtown, nice colonial style, rooms are big and well furnished, the service is excellent,
the hotel is quiet. Certainly the best of the three hotels that we have tested.

Downtown, friendly hosts but the service is sometimes not at the level we would expect for a
4 star hotel, rooms are fine but the carpet is a bit dusty, hotel is quiet.

Grand Hotel ***

Downtown, very nice atmosphere at the middle of exotic plants, the rooms are fine, a bit noisy on
the first floor (wooden parket cracking in the corridor). We were disappointed by the strong smell of cold tabaco in
several bedrooms (unbearable for non-smokers!) and few major mistakes in the service which are not at the level we would
expect for a 3 star hotel. Nevertheless, we were there in 2003, service has certainly improved since then...

Downtown, cheap, rooms are cold and poorly furnished. But, nobody goes to Uyuni to search for confort!
Hotel for one night for most of the tourists traveling to the Salar and Sur Lipez.
